With 4,400 members representing 1,951 higher education institutions in 98 countries, AIS is the largest and most prestigious international professional association for academics involved in research and teaching of information systems.
Deokar is just the second faculty member from the UMass system, and third from the commonwealth, to be recognized as a distinguished member.
“I am honored to receive this recognition and feel humbled to be in company with leaders in the field who have contributed tremendously to the AIS community,” says Deokar, who joined AIS in 2004 as a doctoral student at the University of Arizona. “It speaks to the support I have received from my departments and universities I have been affiliated with, without which many activities would not have been possible, and I am thankful for their support.”
The designation is for AIS members who make a significant impact on the association and serve in a leadership role in AIS or an AIS-related activity, and who have advanced the field of research by being published in at least four publications in an AIS or AIS-affiliated journal.
Deokar, whose research is in the areas of data analytics, enterprise data management, business intelligence, business process management, and collaboration processes, has regularly co-chaired minitracks at the Americas Conference on Information Systems on topics such as “Business Process Management” and "Social Media and Network Analytics.”
He has also served in leadership roles with the Midwest Chapter of AIS and SIG Decision Support and Analytics, and is a member of the recently formed New England Region Chapter of AIS.
Deokar was recognized virtually by AIS during the recent International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS).
Earlier in the week, at the 2020 Pre-ICIS SIGDSA Symposium, doctoral student Sambit Tripathi received the best paper award for his paper “Understanding the order effect of online review sentiments and product features,” which he co-authored with Deokar and Haya Ajjan from Elon University.
In May, Deokar led a virtual discussion on “How Analytics & Big Data are Influencing the World Around Us” as part of the Innovation Hub’s Emerging Technology Speaker Series. More than 70 members of the UML community tuned in on Zoom to listen to Deokar explain how the explosive growth of data and faster computing are driving business intelligence.
