Alex Case, associate professor of sound recording technology, has been named president of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), the world’s foremost professional audio organization.
Case, 52, called his appointment to lead the group, whose goals include advancing audio science, professional practices and education, “an extraordinary honor.” With degrees in mechanical engineering, music and acoustics, Case is known for his expertise in sound aesthetics, perception, signal processing and room acoustics.
The group has 12,000 members around the world, and Case is no stranger to them. He has served on its committees and Board of Governors, thanks to his skills as a “great communicator,” according to outgoing president John Krivit, who hailed Case’s “diverse background in business, science, engineering and academia.”
Looking ahead, Case says he is inspired by the challenges the organization plans to address.
"The audio industry keeps advancing, and the way professionals network and learn keeps evolving. And it is my job to help the talented staff and motivated volunteers who make up the AES navigate these changes,” he says.
Case vows to proudly represent UMass Lowell.
“I would guess I’ve presented more than 1,000 slides with the University of Massachusetts Lowell logo in the corner,” Case says of AES events over the years. “As president, you can be sure there will be many more.”
Case joined the faculty at UMass Lowell in 2004 and offers lectures and master classes; he has published more than 100 articles in audio industry publications. He is also a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
