Students Pitch Ideas for Banking and Finance Innovations

When and where: Tuesday, Dec. 17, 6 p.m. Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, North Campus, 40 University Ave., Lowell

What: UMass Lowell students developing products, services and technologies for the banking and finance industries will pitch their concepts to a panel of expert judges as they vie for seed money to advance their ideas at the DCU/Manning School of Business Innovation Contest. The free event for the campus and community is part of UMass Lowell’s DifferenceMaker Program, which teaches entrepreneurship skills and helps students launch business and nonprofit ventures. Since the program began in 2012, participants have founded 33 companies, raised more than $2.5 million to support their startups and have filed or received eight patents. Art and Design Majors Exhibit Work, Share Inspiration

When and where: Artists’ reception, Thursday, Dec. 19, 5 p.m. Exhibit runs Thursday, Dec. 19 through Monday, Dec. 23 and Thursday, Jan. 2 through Wednesday, Jan. 8. University Gallery, Mahoney Hall, South Campus, 870 Broadway St., Lowell

What: UMass Lowell students pursuing bachelor of fine arts degrees will display their senior thesis projects at a free exhibit for the community and campus that features a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture and 3D interactive installations. The artists – who hail from Framingham, Lowell and Methuen, along with Pelham, N.H. – will talk about their creative process with fellow students, family, faculty and the public during a reception that will kick off the show. Entrepreneurs, Venture Capitalists to Lead Forum on Funding

When and where: Wednesday, Jan. 8, 5:30 p.m. Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center, UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Fourth Floor, 110 Canal St., Lowell

What: Medical device and biotechnology entrepreneurs looking to map the financial growth of their startups will hear from experts in the field at the event “Post-Seed Venture Capital: What Is It? Is it Right for Me?” Speakers are scheduled to include Bill Yelle, a faculty member in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business and entrepreneur-in-residence at Partners Innovation Fund; Nancy Briefs, co-founder and CEO of Altrix Bio; and Dr. Maria Berkman, director, Broadview Ventures. The event is presented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center, a joint venture of UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School that helps medical-device and biotech startups bridge the gap between idea and market. Free Event Traces History of Famous Shipwreck

When and where: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. O’Leary Library Mezzanine, South Campus, 61 Wilder St., Lowell

What: The history behind the 1816 sinking of the French frigate La Medusa, the famous painting it inspired and the discovery of the ship’s wreckage more than a century later will be recounted by Charles Mazel, the technical director of the expedition that found the vessel’s remains off the coast of Africa. The event will be presented by UMass Lowell’s Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA), which offers free enrichment classes and activities. Free parking will be available in the nearby Wilder Lot.
