The University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Asian American Studies calls for proposals for an Indochinese Refugee Fund mini-grant to support research and education on Southeast Asian Americans. One grant of $3,500 or two mini-grants of up to $1750 will be made; matching funds are encouraged, but not required.

Established by the Indochinese Refugee Foundation (led by UMass Lowell Political Science Professor Emeritus Hai Pho and Center for Diversity and Pluralism Director Emeritus Tuyet-Lan Pho), these funds are to be used for research and education “on the Indochinese refugees/immigrants, their pre-emigration and post-immigration experience, their resettlement, their children’s integration, and the US Government as the leading power in the conflict and as host to the refugees/immigrants, its programs and policies toward these refugees/immigrants.”

Funds can be used to support research towards publication in a scholarly journal, an advanced course or seminar, work with the Indochinese Refugee Foundation papers and other projects related to research and education. Funds may not be used for conference travel or cultural events. UMass Lowell faculty and students are encouraged to apply (student projects must have a faculty advisor). Acknowledgment of support from the Indochinese Refugee Fund must be included in any activities (publications, presentations, etc.) that evolve from funded projects.

Please send a 250-word abstract about the project, a brief timeline, a budget and a two-page CV to CAAS@uml.edu and copy to the Center for Asian American Studies Co-Directors (Claire_Lee@uml.edu and Phitsamay_Uy@uml.edu) by August 28, 2026. Grant recipients will be announced by October 1 (or earlier), and grant funds must be used by the end of the fiscal year.
