Carl Wennerlind is a Professor of History and Vice Provost for Research from Barnard College, Columbia University. Professor Wennerlind specializes in the history of early modern Europe, with a focus on intellectual history and political economy.
He is particularly interested in the historical development of ideas on the relationship between economy and nature; and ideas about “improvement” and “modernization.”

Scarcity is one of the most powerful forces shaping everyday decisions. Drawing on his new book "Scarcity: A History from the Origins of Capitalism to the Climate Crisis," Wennerlind explores how modern understandings of scarcity took shape, how they shaped modern thinking about the economy and growth, and their significance for today’s ecological and climate challenges.
