Abstract:
This study examines individuals’ beliefs about political violence as an abstract concept, as well as specific real and hypothetical instances of political violence. Using original survey data, the study evaluated the consistency of individuals’ beliefs by comparing responses to questions about political violence as a concept with those regarding real and hypothetical instances of political violence. The data showed that most respondents did not find political violence acceptable as a concept; however, nearly all respondents at least somewhat agreed that some instances of political violence were justified. This suggests that beliefs about political violence do not necessarily align with beliefs about specific instances of political violence in all cases. Some cases showed a strong partisan divide while other cases showed general bipartisan agreement. These findings highlight the dynamic and complex nature of political beliefs in times of increased political tension.

All are welcome to attend!
