The UMass Lowell community extends its heartfelt condolences to Provost Joe Hartman on the passing of his father, Raymond V. Hartman, who died peacefully on Dec. 17, at the age of 85.

A Chicago native and longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, known for his kindness, integrity and deep commitment to family and community. He spent over four decades in corporate tax, including more than 20 years with Beatrice Foods, and remained active in his parish and community throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean; four children, including Provost Hartman; 10 grandchildren; and his brother, Robert.
