Welcome back to UMass Lowell! As we prepare for the start of a new semester, the Office of Life Safety & Emergency Management would like to remind everyone of some important fire safety practices to help ensure a safe and compliant campus environment.

Campus-Wide Fire Safety Guidelines

  • Know Your Exits: Take a moment to locate the nearest exits in your building. Exit routes must remain clear and unobstructed at all times.
  • Evacuation Protocol: If you see fire or smoke, evacuate the building immediately and call 911 or 978-934-4911 from a safe location. Do not attempt to fight the fire unless you are trained and it is safe to do so.
  • Fire Extinguishers: While some areas may not have portable fire extinguishers due to low hazard classification (e.g., certain labs or offices), this is consistent with Massachusetts Fire Code and designed to prioritize safe evacuation over suppression.
  • Appliance Safety: Only use approved electrical appliances and ensure they are turned off when not in use. Avoid using extension cords as permanent wiring.
  • Report Hazards: If you notice blocked exits, damaged fire safety equipment, or any other safety concern, please report it to Facilities or the Office of Life Safety Office & Emergency Management immediately.

Your awareness and cooperation are essential to maintaining a safe campus for everyone. If you have questions or would like additional fire safety resources or training, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Office of Life Safety & Emergency Management via email: EmergencyPreparedness@uml.edu or phone: 978-934-2618.
