As part of a City of Lowell initiative, the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) will conduct spraying on streets around UMass Lowell campuses on Thursday, Aug. 21 between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Precautions for residents in spraying areas:

  • Close all street-facing windows and turn off “outside air” settings on air conditioners. (The Facilities team will make these adjustments in campus buildings.)
  • Keep pets indoors between sunset and midnight.
  • Do not allow children to play near or behind truck-mounted applicators.
  • Stay indoors during spraying and for 15–20 minutes afterward.
  • Wash homegrown vegetables before consuming if spraying has occurred.

The pesticide being used is similar to those in common flea and tick treatments. Accidental exposure is not expected to cause health concerns for most people. Those with chemical sensitivities or pre-existing health conditions may wish to consult a physician and take additional precautions.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, remember the “5 Ds”:

  • Dress in long sleeves and pants when possible.
  • DEET: Use insect repellent containing DEET, following label instructions.
  • Dawn & Dusk: Be especially cautious during peak mosquito activity.
  • Drain standing water weekly to eliminate breeding sites.
  • Defend by using permethrin-treated clothing and repairing window screens.
