UMass Lowell will honor veterans, their service and sacrifices during a Flag Ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 14 in University Crossing.

The university’s annual recognition of Veterans Day pays tribute to approximately 1,300 UMass Lowell student veterans and active service members, as well as those who are and have served across the country and around the globe.

The event will include the unfurling of an American flag measuring 36 feet by 20 feet and remarks by U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Alan Weary, whose final assignment after a 25-year military career was as Installation Command Chief at Hanscom Air Force Base. Following his retirement on Jan. 1, 2025, Weary will join UMass Lowell’s Applied Research Corporation
as Chief Operating Officer.

Speakers are also scheduled to include Sam Spaziano, president of the university’s Student Veterans Organization and UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen.

Presenting the colors will be the UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC Detachment No. 345. The UMass Lowell Marching Band will perform.

UMass Lowell is ranked as one of the best schools in the nation for veterans by the Military Times and Victory Media.

The UMass Lowell Office of Military and Veterans Services provides a variety of programs for student-veterans to assist them in making a successful transition from military to civilian life, including academic support, advising and peer mentoring. To help jumpstart student-veterans’ entry into the working world after graduation, the university offers a host of specialized career-development programs in collaboration with federal, state, private-industry and nonprofit partners.
