As part of our National Preparedness Month initiatives, the UMass Lowell Office of Life Safety & Emergency Management will conduct a test of the Emergency Alert System (Rave) on Thursday, Sept. 19 between 9 and 11 a.m. The test will last approximately two minutes and will include various notification modalities such as desktop alerts, text notifications, building warning system, and email notifications through the UML Alerts system.

Testing ensures all alert features work as expected and prepares our campus community to respond appropriately in emergencies. Please take a moment to update your contact information by logging into the alerts page before the test.

Features to be tested:

  • Rave Guardian App: Download the free app for enhanced emergency notifications, a safety timer, and quick access to emergency information. Available through the Apple App and Google Play Store.
  • X (Twitter): Follow @UMLAlerts for automatic emergency updates on X.
  • Desktop Capture: Emergency messages will appear directly on powered-on university computer screens. If you don’t regularly reboot your machine, please do so before the test to ensure the software is active.
  • In-building Voice Announcements: In over 25 campus buildings, fire alarm speakers and yellow strobe lights will be used to broadcast emergency instructions.
  • Exterior Voice Announcements: The Emergency Blue Phones around campus will flash and broadcast messages from their speakers.

For questions about the test, please contact David Muse, Assistant Director of Emergency Management, at 978-337-3658 or by email at David_Muse@uml.edu.
