River Hawk Scholars Academy is pleased to announce a mentoring opportunity for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. Mentors from every office - faculty and staff - are encouraged to participate!

We’re launching the fifth year of our Elevate Mentoring program which will pair sophomore RHSA first-generation students with UMass Lowell faculty and staff members. Mentors and mentees will meet a minimum of seven total times during the academic year, including an in person launch event in September and a final celebration in April (dates and times to be announced soon). Prior experience mentoring is not a requirement to participate in our program.

As a mentor, you can expect to:

  • Make a direct and positive impact on a first-generation college student
  • Learn from your mentee about their strengths and their trailblazing story as the first in their family who would complete a four-year college degree
  • Formally meet with your mentee once a month and stay in a regular communication throughout the month
  • Support a first-generation college student with persisting in and completing college

New RHSA mentors will also attend either:

  • a one-hour mentoring training session in August (date and time TBD), or
  • if they are unable to make that time, meet with RHSA Program Coordinator Esmeralda Levesque to review expectations and program outline

If you are interested in this opportunity, fill out this survey by April 17, 2024.

We will use this information to help pair you with a mentee, to shape mentor training, and to produce demographic data for reports about our program. If you have additional questions or comments, contact RHSA Program Coordinator Esmeralda_Levesque@uml.edu.
