By Anne Maglia and Julie Nash
Open to all UMass Lowell undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, this event is an opportunity for students to share their research, service learning projects, study abroad experiences, creative works and other academic endeavors with fellow students, faculty, deans, department chairs, and the extended UMass Lowell community. Students may participate in the symposium as a team or as individuals. We hope you will share this information with students who are working on appropriate projects or experiences.
Details will be published on the Student Symposium website on or before Jan. 23. (You may want to wait until the updates on the website are public before sharing information with students as we are still finalizing details and resources.)
2024 Student Symposium Format
This year, we are excited to bring back poster presentations! Students must choose between an oral presentation or poster presentation. For both options, students must first submit an abstract for approval by their faculty or staff advisor.
- Oral presentation
Students interested in an oral presentation must submit a video of no more than three minutes describing their projects. These videos will be available for public viewing and voting. A team designated by each college dean will select a certain number of finalists proportional to the number of submissions from their college to continue to the final round of live oral presentations at the Student Symposium on April 2.
Students may elect to only compete in the first round of the competition by submitting a video. These students will be eligible for a Fan Favorite award. - Poster presentation
Students interested in a poster presentation must submit a 24” (height) X 36” (width) poster. Students will present their posters to multiple judges. Student should practice presenting their posters in five minutes or under.
As space is limited for posters, we may need to limit the number of poster presenters. In this case, we will use a first come, first serve approach, keeping in mind balanced representation for each college. Please encourage all students to submit their abstracts as soon as possible once the submission form becomes available. - Competition winners
All competition winners will be announced the evening of April 2. One undergraduate and one graduate student or team from each college will be selected as a winner for both the oral presentation option and poster presentation option. We will also select one student or team from each college for a “Fan Favorite” award.
