Hello Immersive Scholars Students!
We are delighted to welcome you to UMass Lowell and extend our congratulations to you as a recipient of an Immersive Scholars Award. This webpage will provide you with some very important information regarding your award, so please read through the details and reach out with any questions you may have to Immersive_Scholars@uml.edu.
Basic Information about your Award
- UMass Lowell Immersive Scholars awards are given as a part of the merit scholarship opportunity to select early action Freshmen.
- The Immersive Scholars award is UP TO $4,000 that can be used towards specific experiential learning programs to be described in this letter.
- Students cannot apply for the Immersive Scholars Program opportunity directly; it was awarded to you based on merit and will provide unique opportunities for developing real world skills that will help you stand out among your peers.
- You must maintain the minimum cumulative GPA as stated in your merit scholarship award letter and be enrolled full time in the day school at UMass Lowell to receive this award.
- You may not reapply to the program, nor can you defer. If not used during summer 2023 or academic year 2023-2024, your award is forfeited.
- You should plan to attend the Immersive Scholars Welcome & Poster Celebration event in the fall. Why is this event important? Because all the returning Immersive Scholars students will be presenting their experience posters and this will give you the opportunity to see firsthand all the options available to you!
Award Options
As a recipient, you have two program options to choose from:
- an Immersive Work or Research experience or
- an Immersive International Study Abroad experience.
Work or Research Experience
This experience is a research experience on campus with a UMass Lowell faculty/staff member OR a community experience in the Lowell area with a non-profit organization or government agency.
- You can work for a total of 250 hours during your sophomore year – either the summer of 2023 (typically 25 hours a week for 10 weeks, but schedules may vary) or the academic year 2023-2024 (about 10 hours a week while enrolled in school).
- The Immersive Scholars award is for up to $4,000 which is paid out in bi-weekly paychecks while you are participating in the work experience (taxes are removed from these paychecks).
- You must turn in all documents to the Student Employment Office (W-4 form, Form I-9, work contract) by the published due date or the award will be forfeited.
- If you select a Work Experience, you must attend the February orientation to help identify the appropriate work experience based on your interests – dates and times to be emailed in January.
International Study Abroad Experience
- Up to $4,000 may be used toward one UMass Lowell approved International Experience, and you must be accepted into a program via the UMass Lowell Office of Study Abroad.
- Only approved expenses will be covered, and the funds will be disbursed during the term in which you participate in the program. Approved expenses include tuition, program fees, airline tickets, or any other required cost.
- The scholarship must be used during summer 2023 or during the academic year 2023-2024, which includes Winter Intersession January 2024.
- If you intend to use the scholarship for summer 2023, you must meet with The Office of Study Abroad and International Experiences before Jan. 31, 2023.
