Who is an Immersive Scholar?

Immersive Scholars are pre-selected freshman applicants who receive a merit award of up to $4,000 to participate in approve experiential learning programs at UMass Lowell. 

Immersive Scholars who are chosen through the Early Action admission process can use this funding during the summer before their sophomore year or at any time during their sophomore academic year.

What can an Immersive Scholar do with their $4,000?

Immersive Scholars can choose from 1 of 3 options to use their award:

Work in research, scholarship or creative projects on-campus with a UML faculty or staff member.

The $4,000 covers approximately 235 hours paid via an hourly wage. 

Examples of previous on-campus departments/ office that hired Immersive Scholars include: 

Biological Sciences, Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences, Chemical, Civil, Plastics, ECE and Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Psychology, Public Health, Radiation Lab, Curriculum and Instruction, Disability Services, Economics, English, Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, History, Library, Political Science, Manning School of Business, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer and Information Science, Music, Criminology and Justice Studies, Sociology, Solomont School of Nursing, Submillimeter Wave Tech Lab, The Office of Marketing and Communications, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of the Registrar, Office of Operations and Information Systems, Provost's Office, Office of Residence Life     

Work at a community organization ( non-profit organization or government agency) in the Lowell area.

The $4,000 covers approximately 235 hours paid via an hourly wage.

Examples of previous off-campus sites that hired Immersive Scholars include:

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell, City of Lowell, CPS Services, Massachusetts State House, Massachusetts Trial Court, MSPCA at Nevins Farm, Safe Exit Initiative and the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center

Participate in an international experience approved through the UMass Lowell Office of International Experiences and Study Abroad.

The Immersive Scholars $4,000 award used for international experiences will be applied directly to the trip cost. 

Examples of previous international programs include:

Italy, Greece, Ecuador (Galapogos), France, Ireland, Portugal, England, Spain, Japan, Cuba, Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Switzerland, Thailand, Wales, Denmark, Korea and more

Basic Information about the Immersive Scholars Award

  • Students cannot apply for the Immersive Scholars program opportunity directly; it is awarded based on merit and will provide unique opportunities for developing real-world skills that will help students stand out among their peers.
  • Students must maintain the minimum cumulative GPA as stated in their merit scholarship award letter and be enrolled full-time in the day school at UMass Lowell to receive this award.
  • Students may not reapply to the program, nor defer. If not used during the summer before sophomore year or during the sophomore academic year, the award is forfeited.
