Afford Your Education with Financial Aid
Financial assistance are available to full time matriculated Work Environment or Public Health graduate students whose program has an occupational and environmental health focus. Financial aid covers tuition and fees, and includes a living stipend.
Departmental Funding and Scholarships
Research Assistantships: Positions involve working with an individual faculty member towards the goals of a specific research project, usually funded by an external grant or contract. These positions are available through the faculty members and vary from year to year according to the external support awarded.NIOSH Traineeships: The Department receives funds from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for traineeships. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.
David H. and Peggy Wegman Endowed Scholarship Fund: The fund will be awarded to one or more students selected by the Work Environment Scholarships Committee in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid. The committee will award scholarship as follows: incoming and continuing graduate students who are committed to an integrated vision of health and environment; incoming graduate students with an undergraduate academic record indicating a 3.000 GPA or higher or continuing students with a graduate GPA of 3.250 or higher who are in good academic standing with preference given to student with a 3.250 GPA or higher; students will be required to carry a full load (9 credits per semester) during the year of the scholarship award; for full time graduate students of exceptional merit enrolled at UMass Lowell. Finalists may be invited for a short in-person interview with the selection committee.
W. Hardie Shepard Memorial Endowed Award: Is a full-time, full academic year Research Assistantship (RA) awarded to students in the Department of Work Environment who are pursuing engineering-related graduate studies, including ergonomics and safety, occupational and environmental hygiene, cleaner production and pollution prevention. Recipients will have a minimum GPA of 3.000 and demonstrated financial need. The student selected should embody the spirit of W. Hardie Shepard and the legacy he established with the Engineering Education Foundation through his/her commitment to using engineering for the public good.
Apply for Aid
Students interested in financial aid should submit the application no later than May 1 (of every year). Financial awards and assistantships are generally assigned in June for the following academic year. In general, students are selected for positions based on their qualifications, including courses taken, grades obtained and specific research interests. Additional awards are sometimes made later in the year depending on available funds. Contact our department administrator, Sokny Long, for an application form.

Work Environment Department is affiliated with several local and national organizations that offers financial support and scholarships to students in the occupational safety, health and environment field. Become a member of these student chapters and apply for their academic scholarship programs.
