Sameera Jangala of Woburn, Massachusetts, came to UMass Lowell as the recipient of a full-tuition Chancellor’s Scholarship and an Immersive Scholars award, which she used to study abroad with the Honors College in San Sebastian, Spain.

During her time at UMass Lowell, she served as the director of signature events for the university’s programming board, the Association for Campus Events; as a nonfiction editor for the school’s literary journal, “The Offering”; and as a writer for the campus newspaper, The Connector. She was also involved in research, having recently presented her Honors thesis on environmental factors that affect weight-related health and lung function in middle childhood.

Jangala also worked for the UMass Lowell Office of Student Life & Involvement’s marketing team, which provided her with a fun, creative outlet to connect with other students. Outside of academics, she likes to sing, having performed at various campus events and sporting games. She made her solo debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall last fall.

Jangala is graduating with her Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in creative writing. She is currently working as a faculty assistant at Shine In Math Academy, where she teaches children both English and math, and has worked extensively as a nursing assistant in the neurosurgical intensive care unit at Beth Israel Lahey Health.

She hopes to pursue medical school, with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. She also wishes to continue her writing career, and is currently working on a manuscript of her first novel. Before applying to medical school, she is planning to work as an EMT, stay involved in clinical research and gain more experience advocating for patients and telling their stories.
