Mubarak Ayinla came to UMass Lowell with a deep passion for chemistry and a firm belief in using science as a tool for good. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry with First Class Honors from the University of Lagos in Nigeria. He is graduating today with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.

During his time at UMass Lowell, Ayinla conducted innovative research at the intersection of dynamic covalent chemistry, materials science and chemical microbiology. His doctoral work has led to organic gels that can repair themselves automatically, modified bacterial molecules aimed at overcoming antibiotic-resistant infections and organic materials designed to remove pollutants from the environment.

This work resulted in several peer-reviewed publications and presentations at academic and industry conferences, supported by multiple research and travel grants.

Beyond the lab, Ayinla served in several student leadership roles, most notably as a two-term president of the Graduate Student Association (GSA). In this role, he helped launch initiatives to foster a more engaging and inclusive graduate student experience, amplified student voices in university decision-making and collaborated with campus partners to organize the university’s inaugural Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition. His leadership also extended to residential life, where he served as a resident advisor and was honored with the Residence Life Unsung Hero Award for his efforts in fostering safe, supportive campus communities.

Looking ahead, Ayinla envisions a career in the chemical industry in which he can translate fundamental science into tangible innovations and deliver impactful, real-world solutions on a global scale. He plans to combine his scientific knowledge with his natural passion for business, using both to create value and uplift others along the way. With aspirations that extend to higher education leadership, Ayinla hopes to eventually serve in senior academic roles where he can contribute to shaping institutional vision and fostering educational excellence. Guided by this deep sense of purpose, he remains committed to creating environments where collaboration, inclusion and collegial growth thrive.
