Microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and parasitic worms—are ubiquitous in nature and play essential roles in sustaining life on Earth. They contribute to the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment by producing oxygen, cycling nutrients, and decomposing organic matter. Yet, some microorganisms are pathogenic and can cause significant harm, leading to infectious diseases that impact global health, food security, and environmental safety.
The Center for Pathogen Research and Training (CPRT) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions in microbial and biomedical research. The Center fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, chemistry, engineering, and public health to better understand microbial behavior, pathogen-host interactions, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental contamination.
CPRT focuses on technology development, fundamental and translational research, student training, and community outreach. Its goal is to establish a Center of Excellence that integrates cutting-edge science, workforce development, and public engagement to address challenges in infectious diseases, environmental microbiology, and global health.
