At UMass Lowell, the following laboratories and equipment are available to the research team:
The SDASL is well equipped to conduct structural dynamic, acoustical, modal analysis, and control system experiments and modeling. This lab is directly under the supervision of the principal investigators Murat Inalpolat and Christopher Niezrecki.
Major Hardware/Acquisition systems include:
Polytec 3D Scanning Laser Vibrometer:
The 3D scanning laser vibrometer can be used to precisely measure the full field vibration response of a surface having complex geometry, without contacting or mass loading the structure.
Aramis 3D Digital Image Correlation System:
The 3D DIC system can be used to measure full field structural shape, strain, and deformation with very high spatial resolution.
Pontos 3D Digital Photogrammatic System:
Complements the Aramis System using alternate mechanisms to obtain data related to specific targets identified on structures.
Two Photron FastCam SA-2 High Speed Cameras:
The cameras are being used in conjunction with a three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation system. The 3D imaging system enables high-precision, non-contacting (and thus non-mass loading), 3D measurement of the dynamic response of a wide range of structures and surfaces (2048x2048 pixels at 1000 fps; reduced resolution at higher rates up to 18000 fps).
Thor Labs 4’ x 8’ Optical Table:
The pneumatically isolated optical table will be used to hold the fixtures such a turbine components, acoustic transducers, and mechanical stages.
64 Channel Microphone Array:
By using a microphone array and acoustic holography or beamforming, the full field sound radiation can be mapped to identify critical or local sources of sound.
Over 150 different accelerometers, a wide variety of modal analysis hammers, 10 mechanical shakers (2 to 200 lbs. range), a variety of piezoelectric actuators, displacement sensors, 2 magnetic probes, 4 capacitance probes, 7 impedance heads, ~15 force transducers, twelve spectrum analyzers (2, 4, 7, 8, and 30 channel), 75+ acoustical microphones, associated microphone amplifiers and signal conditioners, intensity probes, vibration and acoustic pistaphone calibrators, Trek high-voltage power amplifier, ACX high-current power amplifier, and a variety of miscellaneous electronic equipment. Some particular items are:
- 64 channel National Instruments PXI 64 channel data acquisition system
- 40 channel Spectral Dynamic Jaguar acquisition system
- 48 channel DIFA/SCADAS acquisition system
- Several 8 channel DIFA/SCADAS acquisition systems
- Several 8 channel Zonic/Spectral Dynamics PC based portable acquisition systems
- Several 4 channel DACTRON PC based portable acquisition systems
- Several dual channel FFT analyzers
- dSpace (MATLAB based control and data acquisition system)
The primary software includes:
- Suite of CADA-X (software products for test, analysis, system modeling, correlation, vibroacoustics, acoustic holography)
- STAR (modal and acoustics)
- ME Scope
- FEA software (ANSYS, NASTRAN, ADINA, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA3D, ALGOR) with pre/post processing software (FEMAP, Hypermesh, and ABAQUS/CAE)
- and Matlab/Simulink.
Computer: Multiple personal computers are available within all the different laboratories.
Office: All of the laboratories have ample graduate student office space. There are ample desks, printers, scanners, etc. to support these activities.
Other Resources: Within the Department of Mechanical Engineering there is also a machine shop available to fabricate custom components as needed.
