Research Interests

Metabolic Engineering; Biochemical Engineering; Biomanufacturing; Bioprocess Modeling, Optimization, and Control.

(1) Microbial Biomanufacturing platform: Engineering bacteria and yeast cells; Cellular and metabolic engineering; Products: omega-3 fatty acids; carotenoids, wax esters; Bioprocess and bioreactor engineering; Bioenergy – continuous manufacturing of biofuels.
(2) Biomanufacturing of pharmaceuticals: Integrated continuous biomanufacturing.
(3) Bioprocess and Bioreaction Modeling: Bioprocess modeling, optimization, and control; Application of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Bioprocesses; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) of Bioreactors.
(4) Biodegradation and Bioconversion of Plastic Wastes: Enzymatic Degradation of PET plastics; Engineered bacteria to produce enzymes; Design of new enzymatic reaction system.

Biography

Dr. Xie is an associate professor in Chemical Engineering. His research focuses on metabolic engineering, bioprocess engineering, and continuous biomanufacturing. Prior to joining UML in 2016, Dr. Xie was a principal scientist at DuPont during 2006-2016, where he led the fermentation engineering team to commercialize the omega-3 project, which brought the company two new commercial products.
