Civil Engineering Celebrates 50th Anniversary During Reunion Weekend

More than 300 alumni came from near and far for the university’s annual Golden Alumni Reunion and a special 50th Anniversary of Civil Engineering celebration. The festivities, held May 13-15, included faculty lectures, a veterans’ breakfast, receptions and campus tours.
“It’s uplifting to come back to campus. The growth of the university is just amazing,” says Pauline Golec ’62, a Massachusetts State Teachers College graduate, who attended her 60th reunion.
Invitations were extended to alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago from UML’s predecessor schools: Lowell Technological Institute, State Teachers College at Lowell, Massachusetts State College at Lowell, Lowell State College and to Civil and Environmental Engineering program graduates.
“UMass Lowell was and is a special place. Our alumni share a bond, and this unique sense of pride creates a family of supporters that propel our campus forward,” says Heather Makrez Allen ’06, ’08, ’21, executive director of alumni and donor relations.
Prof. Donald Leitch of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering regaled attendees at the civil engineering anniversary celebration with his memories of teaching over the decades.
Randy Hecht ’77 flew in from California for the civil engineering anniversary. “The quality of the education versus what you paid in the 1970s — I don’t think you could have found that anywhere else,” he says.
