LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell’s online education programs extend their standing as among the best in the country, according to 2022 rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report, which assessed more than 1,700 programs nationwide.

UMass Lowell’s online master’s program in criminal justice is ranked No. 2 in the nation and the highest in New England among all public and private institutions, while also more affordable than the program offered by the institution ranked first on the national list.

UMass Lowell also received high marks for its online degrees in education, psychology and business, among others.

“We’re proud U.S. News & World Report has again this year recognized UMass Lowell as a standard-bearer in offering top-quality educational programs that provide a strong return on investment,” said Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, who founded the university’s online program more than 20 years ago and is an internationally recognized leader in the field.

UMass Lowell’s online graduate education programs rank the highest among New England institutions and No. 7 in the nation – up 16 spots from last year. UMass Lowell offers multiple options in the field, including education administration, curriculum and instruction, reading and language, and administration, planning and policy.

Among New England colleges and universities, UMass Lowell offers the best online bachelor’s program in psychology, a program ranked No. 13 nationally by U.S. News & World Report.

UMass Lowell’s online graduate programs in business are also among the highest-ranking in the survey and among the most affordable. Nationally, UMass Lowell’s online MBA is No. 31, while the university’s online graduate programs in accounting, business analytics and finance are No. 21 in the country.

The university’s online bachelor’s degree programs – which include subjects from business and English to liberal arts, information technology and criminal justice – are ranked No. 35 in the nation overall and the best among higher-education institutions in Greater Boston.

All of UMass Lowell’s online programs – which see more than 35,000 enrollments annually – are accredited and offered through the same high-quality academic departments as on-campus degree programs. Online students are connected to a brick-and-mortar institution, one of the top 100 public universities in the nation and have access to a broad range of support in-person and online designed to meet their unique needs.

“UMass Lowell’s online programs leverage the strength of the university’s outstanding faculty and dedicated team of online course developers to provide adult learners with nationally recognized, affordable and flexible programs that meet their needs,” said Steven Tello, UMass Lowell’s vice provost for graduate, online and professional studies. “We are gratified our achievements are reflected in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings.”
