Photo Exhibit Focuses in on the Azores

When and where: Artists’ reception, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. University Crossing second floor, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell

What: The exhibit “Seeing the Archipelago” features photographs taken by UMass Lowell students who traveled to the Azores as part of a class on documentary imaging that also taught them about the history of immigrants who came from the islands to Lowell. The students – who hail from communities including Boston, Methuen, Lawrence, Tyngsborough and Wakefield, along with Afton, Va. – will also share what they learned through the experience at an artists’ reception. Paulo Teves, the Azores’ regional director for communities, is expected to offer remarks at the event. Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the campus and community. Economist Examines Housing Market Forecast at Free Event

When and where: Thursday, Feb. 20, 11:45 a.m., UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell

What: Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Homebuilders, will address the latest economic and housing forecast and offer his opinion about the potential for a recession at “The Housing Affordability Crisis.” The free program is the latest in UMass Lowell’s Lunchtime Lecture series, which engages the campus and public in educational and cultural topics of interest. The event is presented in partnership with the Moses Greeley Parker Lectures. Members of the public who would like to attend should email community@uml.edu in advance to register.

Philosophy and Film Series Takes on Martial Arts Classic ‘Fearless’

When and where: Monday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. Luna Theater, Mill No. 5, 250 Jackson St., Lowell

What: “Fearless,” starring Jet Li and based on the life of Chinese martial arts master Huo Yuanjia, will be screened at a free event for the public as part of UMass Lowell’s “Philosophy and Film” series. After the movie, Philosophy Assistant Prof. Nicholas Evans will lead a discussion about themes in the film including how martial arts movies are often a vehicle for political expression. Entrepreneurship Program Promotes the Creative Economy

When and where: Thursday, March 5, 2 p.m. Alumni Hall, North Campus, 84 University Ave., Lowell

What: Alice Loy – an expert in building ecosystems to support businesses run by musicians, filmmakers, writers and others involved in the arts – will lead a presentation on the topic, the latest event in UMass Lowell’s Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. The author of the book “Creative Economy Entrepreneurs: From Startup to Success,” Loy is the founder of Creative Startups, an accelerator for businesses dedicated to storytelling, art, design and the culinary arts.
