Festival Honors Immigrants’ Cultures, Experience
When and where: Saturday, March 2, 6 p.m., University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff will honor the experience and cultures of the many immigrants who call the region home with a festival to support the African Community Center of Lowell and the International Institute of New England. Presented by the student-run Peace and Conflict Studies Club, the event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music, food, a raffle and a silent auction.
‘A Pitch of Her Own’ Highlights Promising Products, Startups
When and where: Monday, March 4, 6 p.m. UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, 110 Canal St., Lowell
What: Women entrepreneurs will share their concepts for new products and businesses at “A Pitch of Her Own,” a free program open to the public and campus community. Eight of the event’s participants will go on to showcase their ideas and compete for prizes before a panel of expert judges. The event is presented by the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub business incubator and Entrepreneurship for All (EforAll), a community organization launched through the university with initial funding from the Deshpande Foundation to cultivate the business ecosystem in Lowell and Lawrence. Photo Exhibit Captures the Azores’ Beauty, Identity
When and where: Opening reception – Wednesday, March 6, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Wednesday, April 17. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: “The Azores: Nine Islands, Nine Photographers” will display more than 50 images, the work of acclaimed Portuguese artists who have used their lenses to capture the raw beauty and cultural significance of these mid-Atlantic islands west of Portugal. Free and open to the public, the exhibit’s opening reception is expected to include remarks from photographer Pedro Letria, whose photographs are featured in the show, and UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney. The event is presented by UMass Lowell’s Saab Center for Portuguese Studies as part of its fifth anniversary celebration. Nobel Prize-Nominated Author Dacia Maraini to Speak
When and where: Wednesday, March 6, 5:30 p.m. Allen House, South Campus, 2 Solomont Way, Lowell
What: Italian writer Dacia Maraini, a nominee for the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature, will lead a free program about her work and creative process for the campus and community. The daughter of a Sicilian princess, Maraini became enamored of storytelling as a child while she was imprisoned with her family in a Japanese concentration camp because of their opposition to Benito Mussolini, a Japanese ally in World War II. She is the author of acclaimed plays, screenplays and novels largely focused on women’s issues and is also an actor. The event will be moderated by UMass Lowell World Cultures and Languages faculty member Giulia Po DeLisle. Free parking will be available in the nearby Wilder Faculty Lot. UMass Lowell Celebrates International Women’s Day
When and where: Friday, March 8, 3 to 5 p.m. University Crossing, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: Tea and traditions from countries around the globe will be featured during a free event for the public and campus that celebrates International Women’s Day and pays tribute to the social, political, cultural and economic strides made toward gender balance, as well as offering networking opportunities. Leaders from the community, along with UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff are expected to participate. Members of the public who would like to attend should register by email to multicultural_affairs@uml.edu.
