Public Invited to Join Campus Community for Weekend of Celebration

WHAT:  The public is invited to participate in UMass Lowell’s River Hawk Homecoming, which will bring together generations of UMass Lowell alumni, students, parents and friends for a celebration of campus life. 

The event-packed weekend offers family-friendly activities including an outdoor festival that will feature entertainment including Bearstronaut, which recently performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Athletics will be highlighted at events including a celebration of sports and games featuring women’s sports and the nationally ranked men’s ice hockey team, which will play on Friday and Saturday nights.

Those who haven’t been to UMass Lowell in recent years will discover there’s never been a better time to visit. The university has grown to more than 18,000 students and opened 14 new properties since 2009, including new academic and research buildings, residence halls and student centers. Homecoming events will honor the university’s esteemed past, reunite classmates and forge new friendships.

Activities include:

  • “Rise Up, A Celebration of Sport” – The gala will highlight UMass Lowell’s great moments in athletics and look to the future, as the transition to the NCAA’s Division I is complete. Performers are scheduled to include Nashville recording artist and UMass Lowell graduate Jilly Martin and the UMass Lowell Gospel Choir. Thursday, Oct. 12, 5 p.m., Lowell Memorial Auditorium, 50 E.   • “Hawkey Way” – A fan favorite, this free outdoor festival for all ages will feature a performance by the dance-pop group Bearstronaut, which is comprised of UMass Lowell alumni. The event will include carnival games, food, music and more. Saturday, Oct. 14, 3 to 6 p.m., Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
  • Jennifer’s Fun Run/Walk – Held annually in memory of UMass Lowell graduate Jennifer D’Amour ’98, the 5K race benefits a scholarship fund for UMass Lowell women’s cross-country and track-and-field student-athletes Saturday, Oct. 14, noon, Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell 
  • Women’s athletics – UMass Lowell’s women’s sports teams take on their America East rivals at free games on Sunday, Oct. 15. Volleyball faces the University of Maryland Baltimore County at noon, followed by field hockey’s face off with Albany at 2 p.m. and then women’s soccer takes on Binghamton University at 4:30 p.m. Costello Athletic Center and Cushing Field Complex, North Campus, 275 Riverside St., Lowell.
