WHAT: More than 300 educators from colleges and universities across North America are convening this week at the sixth annual Deshpande Symposium for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
The conference, presented by UMass Lowell and the Deshpande Foundation, brings together experts and innovators in entrepreneurship education and recognizes top individuals and institutions. More than two dozen sessions across four topics – ecosystems, curriculum, commercialization and trends – are being offered at the symposium.
The Deshpande Symposium Awards will be presented on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. and will honor excellence in curriculum innovation, student engagement, technology commercialization and more. Speakers during the conference will include UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney and renowned tech entrepreneur Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, founder of the Deshpande Foundation.
Featured events also include keynote addresses by:
- Jerry Engel, Silicon Valley veteran and founder of the University of California at Berkeley’s Lester Center for Entrepreneurship who has been a pioneer in taking the learning experience beyond the classroom, who will discuss creating regional innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems and transforming entrepreneurship education. Tuesday, June 13, 8:40 to 9:30 a.m.
- Laurie Leshin, president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a former senior executive with NASA, who will discuss accelerating efforts to take theory to practice to impact on campus and beyond. Wednesday, June 14, 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
- Bob Metcalfe, professor of innovation at the University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering and founder of 3Com Corp., who will discuss models for how research universities can support startups and technology commercialization. Wednesday, June 14, 3:15 to 4 p.m.
