What: Whether teaching Lowell residents how to create a household budget, improving the Merrimack Valley Watershed or exploring the culture of the Basques in Spain, UMass Lowell students have done some amazing things over their summer “vacation.” Close to 100 of them will talk about their experiences during the Co-op Scholar Showcase.

UMass Lowell’s Co-op Scholar Program enables students in all majors to apply what they are learning in the classroom to real-world situations. Participants may conduct research on campus, work in the community with a nonprofit or government agency or choose an international experience. Students, who typically take part in the program over the summer before their sophomore year, work with UMass Lowell faculty and professional mentors and receive a stipend. The annual showcase, set for Wednesday, allows co-op scholars to share their accomplishments with peers, parents and the public.

Community projects by UMass Lowell students included teaching schoolchildren how to play instruments, helping low-income residents build financial literacy skills, promoting the Whistler House Museum of Art and E for All entrepreneurship program and supporting the work of a hospice center – all in Lowell. Research projects ran the gamut, from an initiative that looks at developing new ways to treat breast cancer to improving how to construct blades for wind turbines. Students who studied overseas immersed themselves in the way of life of citizens of the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Spain.
