    A website that allows anyone to practice vocabulary while also providing rice to people in need of food. It supplies a word and asks the user to choose its synonym from a list that follows. It also offers other content areas, grammar for example - all while supporting a good cause.
  • Quizlet
    The “Quizlet” website allows students to practice vocabulary and grammar as well as learn about many different areas of study through quizzes and short answer questions.
  • JogNog
    A free test-preparation website that provides a library of videos and quizzes mapped to state academic standards. It contains practice quizzes on a range of academic areas as well as an extensive literature section, a section on developing vocabulary for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and other test prep activities.
  • Newsela
    A free daily online newspaper for students that contains selected, high interest news stories. This website allows students to choose their own reading level for each article. After each article there are comprehension and writing activities for practice

    Lingual allows students to learn English through media.
  • Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary
    Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary allows students to learn new words and their pronunciations and definitions.

    Use this glossary of common college terminology to help you decipher what your US college advisers, professors and classmates are saying.

  • BBC Bitesize
    This is the BBC website for GCSE (British A-level exam) preparation. There are texts in all subject areas along with comprehension questions and suggested answers. The majority of the questions require open responses, which is great practice for getting ready for college classes at UMass Lowell.
  • NYT Landing Page for Learners
    The New York Times provides a section for teaching and learning. There are articles, questions, writing prompts and more for students to practice with as well as lesson plans for several different subjects.
  • Paradigm Online Writing Assistant
    Paradigm Online Writing Assistant provides students with tips on structure, sentence formulation, spelling, grammar and more.

  • ESL Gold
    Contains a variety of grammar lessons and explanations.
  • Grammar Exercises
    Although it has ads, this website has excellent exercises with answer keys – great for self-directed study.
  • English Club
    Another grammar exercise site with excellent explanations.
  • The MacMillan Thesaurus
    Unlike most thesauri, this one offers definitions of all synonyms, thus making it easier to select the correct word.
  • Onelook Dictionary
    Shows the entries in multiple dictionaries (so you can choose the one that works best for you); it also organizes the hits by discipline
  • Howjsay
    A great pronunciation tool that will play recordings of variations in pronunciation of the same word (for example, New Zealand vs. the UK, or Midwestern US vs Northeastern US)
