Who can use The Writing Center?

The Writing Center is open to all UMass Lowell students: undergraduate and graduate students across all academic majors and disciplines. Tutors are ready and eager to work with writers of all abilities.

What types of writing projects can I bring to The Writing Center?

Tutors are happy to work with students on a wide variety of writing projects: lab reports, college application essays, academic essay assignments, dissertations, etc.

Do I need to have a completed paper before meeting with a Writing Center tutor?

No! You may come see a tutor at any stage of your writing process. It can be helpful to meet with a tutor in the early stages of a writing project to discuss and brainstorm ideas, or to talk about how to get started on an assignment. It can also be valuable to visit a tutor when you have an outline, or an early draft. Coming with a nearly completed paper for a final revision and proofreading session can be helpful too.

Does The Writing Center offer support to multilingual students?

Yes. The Writing Center tutors are prepared to work with multilingual student writers.

How are tutors trained?

The Writing Center hires both undergraduate peer tutors and professional tutors. Undergraduate tutors have been recommended by professors as students who have strong writing skills and possess a minimum 3.000 GPA. All tutors are certified through College Reading and Learning Association training. Tutors participate in regular writing-related professional development.
