Madeline Smith is an Industrial Engineering major in the Honors College at UMass Lowell. Drawn to the field by her love of systems and process engineering, she has built her college experience around a simple throughline: understanding how the pieces of a system fit together, and using that understanding to make things run better for people.

That same instinct extends beyond the classroom. Madeline is passionate about helping people and connecting with others. She is vice president and one of the founding members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) club on campus, where she has helped to build a community for peers who share her interest in manufacturing and process improvement from the ground up.

Madeline is currently on co-op at Boston Engineering Corporation, where she works as part of the company's Maritime Intelligence team, gaining hands-on exposure to how systems-level thinking translates into real engineering solutions in a professional environment.

Outside of engineering, Madeline played club softball, an experience that helped shape her perseverance, drive, and professionalism. She now coaches club softball herself, applying those same lessons to help develop the next generation of players — a role that has sharpened her own approach to leadership, built around meeting people where they are and guiding without dictating.

Madeline was drawn to the Shah Academy for the opportunity to grow as a leader alongside a community of ambitious, like-minded scholars. She sees leadership not as a title but as an extension of the same qualities that draw her to industrial engineering in the first place: the ability to see a whole system, understand the people within it, and help everyone move toward a shared goal. Looking ahead, Madeline hopes to use the foundation she builds at the Shah Academy — combined with her background in systems engineering — to eventually pursue work in government policy, where she can apply engineering thinking to solving large-scale, systemic problems.
