Biosketch
Nathan Kirokwa is a Biomedical Engineering major pursuing minors in Physics and Nuclear Engineering at UMass Lowell. Raised in Woburn, Massachusetts, and currently living in Salem, New Hampshire, Nathan was drawn early on to math, biology, and problem-solving with a strong desire to make a tangible difference in healthcare. His journey into biotechnology began at age 16 when he joined Sensa Wellness (formerly Conduit Computing), a startup developing saliva-based rapid diagnostics and health monitoring tools alongside CEO Ryan Robinson.
Determined to expand his perspective, Nathan has pursued a diverse array of hands-on technical roles across campus and industry. He serves as the Lead Biosensing Systems Engineer at Sensa Wellness, studies as an auxiliary nuclear reactor operator trainee at the UMass Lowell Research Reactor, and conducts research with Professor Li’s lab on microfluidic cell separation techniques to optimize forensic sexual assault kits. Through these experiences, he continuously seeks out new challenges to refine his technical foundation and learn from every mentor and peer he meets.
Nathan’s approach to leadership centers on empowerment, active listening, and creating environments where others feel supported to contribute based on their unique strengths. Looking beyond graduation, Nathan is deeply passionate about advancing healthcare equity and expanding access to vital diagnostic tools. He aspires to become a Qualified Medical Physicist at an academic medical center leading research on accessible diagnostic techniques, or to establish a private practice dedicated to improving medical workflows and diagnostic availability for underserved communities.
When he isn't in the lab, Nathan stays active on the rugby field or a nearby trail. In his downtime, you can catch him experimenting with new recipes from Pinterest, singing karaoke at the top of his lungs, or journaling about whatever random thoughts pass through his mind.
