Biosketch
Morgan Donegan is a Plastics Engineering major in the Class of 2029, pursuing a minor in Business Administration in Plastics at UMass Lowell. Originally from Wakefield, Massachusetts, Morgan is a legacy UMass Lowell student. Her father graduated from UMass Lowell with a degree in Criminal Justice, and she is the first in her family to pursue engineering.
Morgan originally planned to attend Providence College with her twin sister to study business. She ultimately chose UMass Lowell, where she initially intended to remain on a business path. During her first campus tour, another UMass Lowell student encouraged Morgan to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Plastics Engineering. She was drawn to the field because of its community, and opportunities to challenge herself.
Morgan entered engineering determined to push herself beyond what she originally believed she was capable of, quickly discovering a passion for plastics, manufacturing, design, and sustainability. Her first major experience with the engineering community came through the Research Academics and Mentoring Pathways (RAMP) Program the summer before her freshman year. Through RAMP, she built relationships with many of the peers and faculty members who continue to support her today. Those early experiences and connections helped Morgan become an Ambassador for the Francis College of Engineering, where she participates in recruitment and outreach to prospective and incoming students. Morgan also works as an Undergraduate Research Assistant, contributing to research focused on polymer processing, sustainability, plastics recycling, and renewable materials.
Morgan first learned about Shah Academy through her interactions with UMass Lowell faculty, particularly the Manager of Undergraduate Programs and Outreach in the Francis College of Engineering, who connected her with Nuzhat. That initial interaction sparked her interest in the program and ultimately led her to apply. Through Shah Academy, Morgan has continued to explore the plastics industry, connect with professionals, and expand her understanding of the opportunities available within engineering.
Looking toward the future, Morgan hopes to continue developing her experience in leadership, peer outreach, research, and engineering while continuing to explore the many possibilities within her field. Most importantly, Morgan hopes to encourage future students to challenge themselves and pursue opportunities they may not initially believe are possible, particularly young women considering careers in engineering and STEM.
