Expertise
Exercise physiology; metabolism; skeletal muscle; obesity; diabetes
Research Interests
- Identifying the mechanism(s) through which behavioral (e.g., exercise and diet) and pharmacologic therapies mitigate cardiometabolic disease pathogenesis;
- Examining strategies to preserve or enhance muscle mass and function (e.g., muscle strength, muscle quality, and physical performance).
Education
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Boston University, Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology) - University of Illinois
- Master of Science (M.S.), Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology) - James Madison University
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology) - University of Illinois

Rudy Valentine, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. As both a basic and applied exercise physiologist, his work probes into mechanistic pathways to address public health issues relevant for a variety of populations (obesity and aging) and conditions (type 2 diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and cardiovascular disease). To tackle these challenges, his lab combines basic science with translational human physiology, using a variety of methods, including cell culture, rodent models, and clinical human studies.
