In a system-wide decision, the university is replacing Sophos Intercept X with Microsoft Defender for Endpoints (MDE) as the university’s antivirus solution for Windows, MacOS, and Linux.
Two weeks ago, Information Technology began the transition with MacOS systems.
For Windows-based systems, IT plans to transition to MDE starting the week of May 2. Users will have two opportunities to upgrade:
1. Do it yourself
Starting on May 2, you can start the upgrade process when it is most convenient for you. IT strongly recommends everyone upgrade at their earliest convenience. For instructions, please visit IT’s Antivirus Update website.
2. System automated, beginning May 25
If you have not completed the upgrade prior to May 25, your computer will be upgraded automatically the next time you use it. You will not be able to schedule the upgrade or the required reboot. You will receive notices at 15 and 10 minutes before the reboot, which will allow you to save your documents.
For most systems, the upgrade process will take approximately 20-25 minutes, during which you can continue to use your computer. Once complete and your computer is rebooted, your system will be automatically protected by Microsoft Defender.
