During these times, it is essential that we take care of ourselves as well. In the last five years UMass Lowell has invested heavily in elevating mental health initiatives. While we still have more to do, I’m asking all members of the campus community to join me in recognizing and participating in the first-ever Mental Health Action Day on Thursday, May 20.
Organized by a coalition of nonprofits, brands and influential leaders across the country, the goal of this day is to move from mere awareness to action about the importance of mental health. To help faculty and staff engage on Mental Health Action Day, HR/EOO is offering a series of virtual workshops May 20 including yoga, mindfulness and an overview of our Employee Assistance Program (EAP). To register for any of these programs, please e-mail wld_registrations@uml.edu.
Every employee, for free, has access through the EAP, to professionals and information to help you and members of your family deal with stress, mental health challenges and other personal issues. Via confidential telehealth options, EAP personnel can provide you with a sympathetic ear as well as recommendations for further treatment. For some, this service can be a bridge while a permanent care provider is sought. For others, one or two conversations can help alleviate a burden weighing on them.
Whether it is meditation, exercise, taking time alone or safely gathering with friends, it is critical that each of us find ways to recharge. As you have done throughout the last year, please make it a point to take time – and provide time – Thursday and check in with your colleagues. Ask if they need help or support. And, please don’t hesitate to ask for help for yourself as well.
Summer is also a great opportunity for vacations and time away. I urge all employees to make use of it.
Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for UMass Lowell. Please also be sure to take care of yourselves and those you love.
