Over the past quarter century, UMass Lowell has built a research enterprise defined by purpose, partnership and real-world impact.

Investments in advanced laboratories, industry partnerships and interdisciplinary centers have fueled discoveries that improve lives and strengthen communities.

From robotics and renewable energy to health technologies, advanced fabrics and nanomanufacturing, faculty and students are solving global challenges.

That sustained growth culminated in 2025 when UML achieved Research 1 (R1) status from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education—signifying the highest level of research activity among U.S. universities. The designation places UML among the nation’s top 7% of four-year institutions and affirms its growing influence in science, technology, health and the public good.
