October Community Thursdays Event with Alternative House!
Join the Center for Community Research & Engagement for our Community Thursdays event coming soon on Oct. 17 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at 150 Wilder St. In recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our featured organization is Alternative House, a valued organization in Lowell that provides domestic violence services including emergency shelter and 24-hour crisis hotline services, support groups, youth and teen programming, and much more.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to learn more about the vital work of Alternative House and the types of collaborations they are interested in forming with our UML community, including: Research & Data Collection; Internships & Practicums; Training & Capacity Building; Public Health & Medical Support; Awareness Campaigns & Events; and Volunteer & Mentorship Programs.
Alternative House is also hoping to spread awareness of their services and initiatives for the Lowell community with an emphasis on colleges/universities since statistics show high domestic violence prevalence in 18- to 24-year-olds. They are looking to have more of a presence in the community for outreach, prevention and education.
A little more about the services provided by Alternative House:
- Residential Programming: Emergency Shelter, Permanent Affordable Housing, and Rental Assistance
- Community Based Services: 24 Hour Hotline, Safety Planning, Legal Advocacy, Court Accompaniment, Support Groups, and Domestic Violence Counseling
- Supervised Children’s Visitation Center: Supervised Visits, Semi-Supervised Visits, and Monitored Exchanges
- Community Outreach & Education: Workshops and Trainings, Speaking Engagements, and School based curriculums
There are amazing people doing important work in our community, both on and off campus. Join us for this informal conversation to talk about how we can support each other and collaborate to improve the lives of everyone in our community.
