Brief Abstract:
Muslims are the fastest-growing religious group in the US, consisting of immigrants, second-generation Muslims, and converts. Despite their growing presence in the US, the experiences of Muslim people in the healthcare system are understudied. The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to that literature by examining healthcare utilization and health outcomes of Muslim Americans. This dissertation focuses on medical mistrust, the patient-provider relationship, and discrimination. Although these factors were examined and highlighted in previous research, this dissertation will use quantitative methods with both a person and variable-centered approach, as well as qualitative methods, to better understand the interpersonal and structural mechanisms that affect healthcare utilization and health outcomes among Muslim Americans.
