I am pleased to announce the opportunity for full-time faculty members to apply for the position of Associate Head (Dean) of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. This is an exceptional chance to help lead and shape the future of graduate education on our campus.

The Associate Head (Dean) will assist the Head (Dean) in the overall management and operation of the Graduate School and assure that the functions of the graduate school are well integrated with academic affairs, research, student affairs, GPS and ISSO. The Associate Head (Dean) will collaborate with colleges and key partners to champion programs aligned with research trends and market needs and pursue opportunities for grad student internships, research, and student employment. The Associate Head (Dean) will work closely with the Director of Graduate Student Services to formalize policies and procedures related to graduate studies while implementing a process of assessment and continuous improvement of graduate programs based on student outcomes, feedback, and institutional research data. The Associate Head (Dean) will also promote faculty, postdoc, and graduate student professional development and mentoring through workshops and seminars.

This is a 12-month renewable term position with the selected candidate receiving a reduction in teaching load and service expectations along with an annual stipend. This position is open to all faculty, although assistant and associate professors will be required to provide a statement of support from their dean (to ensure that responsibilities of the position do not interfere with promotion).

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Full-time faculty member at UMass Lowell with a research-based doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated leadership in academic program development and administration, with an ability to provide strategic vision and direction and implement policies and procedures.
  • Proven ability to mentor students and postdocs in a diverse academic environment.
  • Strong commitment to supporting student success, diversity, and inclusivity.
  • Experience developing and implementing student support services and programs and managing fellowships or financial aid programs.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment for graduate students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with students, faculty, administration, and external partners.
  • Strong leadership presence, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to the changing landscape of graduate education.
  • Ability to navigate complex ethical and legal issues in an academic setting.

Interested candidates should send their CV and a cover letter outlining their interest in the position, the relevance of their experience to this role, their vision for graduate studies at UML, their administrative philosophy, and their approach to fostering diversity to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024.
