The story of Lowell is the stories of immigrants. The acute crisis of newly arrived migrant families in Massachusetts is fueling interest in immigration as a pressing policy issue. From the Governor’s office to Lowell City Hall, to the UMass Lowell Chancellor’s office, decisionmakers seek ways of helping new immigrants to the state. Many migrants and refugees are fleeing terror or poverty and courageously seeking a better life and a new home. As debates over policy heat up, it is easy to lose sight of the people who the system is meant to serve. It is also easy to forget the vast majority of us who make our home in the United States are also immigrants or children of immigrants.
Please join us as UMass Lowell hosts a panel of recent immigrants to Lowell, as they describe their journey finding home here in Lowell. This is an opportunity to focus on the human side of their journeys and to build bridges for a stronger community together.
Refreshment will be provided. For more information, contact Aaron Shepherd.
