Women in Defense (WiD) is an organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of women in all aspects of national security. Incorporated in 1985, this empowerment organization provides women a business environment for professional growth through strategic networking, education, and career development.

In collaboration with UMass Lowell, the Boston Chapter of Women in Defense has scholarship opportunities between $1,000 - $5,000 for UMass Lowell undergraduate and graduate students who are US citizens majoring in business, engineering, or science who have a demonstrated interest to pursue a career in the defense industry or who are currently doing research on a defense topic. The application process is as follows:

1. Draft a brief essay that includes the following information:
a. Your full name, UML Student ID#, GPA, and level of study+major (e.g., BS
Mechanical Engineering or MS Civil Engineering)
b. Why have you chosen to pursue a career in your chosen field?
c. What you have done to demonstrate interest in pursuing a career in the defense industry, or what you are currently researching on a defense topic?
d. How will this scholarship support your objective to make a contribution to the
defense industry?

2. The document should be a maximum of two (2) pages, 12pt Arial font, 1” margins.

3. Applications due Monday- January 8, 2024 @12 noon, via email as an attachment (Word or PDF) sent to the appropriate college contact, based on your major:

Students will be notified of a decision by Friday, February 9, 2024.
Recipients will be highlighted at the annual UML & WiD Empowering Women in Business and STEM event Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

All UMass Lowell women students interested in a career within the defense industry are encouraged to attend this event and network with defense industry professionals regardless of scholarship selection.

Registration for the event is free for students, but registration for the Feb. 20 event is required. Registration deadline: February 12.
