Over 40% of our undergraduate students transfer from other institutions. We want them to feel like River Hawks as soon as they set foot on campus. The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the launch of a new program to support incoming transfer students beginning in Fall 2023. The Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) is designed to support incoming transfer students during their first semester at the university. The program connects new transfer students to peer allies -- current transfer students who are eager to share what they’ve learned about making the shift to UML. In addition, we offer networking opportunities, career and financial advice, and a chance to join a supportive community of faculty, staff and fellow students.

Reporting to the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, the Transfer Alliance Program will be led by faculty Director Kyle Coffey (Exercise Science) and our new Coordinator of Transfer Initiatives, Ellen Nichols. A steering committee of faculty and staff will drive the programming and integrate TAP with college-based initiatives: Christopher Carlsmith (History), Aida Kadic-Galeb (Mathematics and Statistics), Karen (Jingrong) Lin (Accounting), Jesus Reyes-Blanco (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering), Erin Maitland (Honors College), and Kristen Rhyner (Centers for Learning, Advising, and Student Success), and Anne Rhoads (Economics).

In addition to building new opportunities for our transfer students, we also want to connect them with the many university- and college-based experiences that are happening in other areas. If you have an event or opportunity that would be a good fit for new transfer students, please contact your college-based steering committee member or email TAP@uml.edu.
