With much appreciation for his work, I'm writing to share the news that computer science Professor Fred Martin, associate dean for teaching, learning and undergraduate studies, will be the next chair of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He will begin his appointment in August 2023.

Fred launched his academic career at UMass Lowell as an assistant professor in 2002. As a faculty member, Fred built interdisciplinary collaborations across UMass Lowell and became an internationally recognized scholar of computer science and artificial intelligence education.

As associate dean, Fred created the River Hawk Review grade recovery program, the Science Scholars and Discoveries undergraduate research programs, and the KCS Teaching Faculty mentorship program. He collaborated closely with units across the university, including Career Services; Admissions; Academic Technology; the Registrar; the Centers for Learning, Advising and Student Success; Residence Life; Advancement; Graduate, Online and Professional Studies; and the Provost's Office.

In the coming weeks, the college will be putting together a search committee to identify Fred’s successor.

I thank Fred for his hard work, and his commitment and positive impact on our students. The University of Texas at San Antonio is fortunate to have attracted him to its rank. I wish Fred success and happiness in his new endeavors.
