The Department of World Languages and Cultures presents the following course this Fall 2023:

WLCH 3100 Women in Chinese Culture

MWF 11 - 11:50 a.m.

This course examines how women are represented in Chinese Culture from the Middle Ages to modern times (the 12th to early 20th centuries).

During this period, images of women are increasingly transformed from traditional political or moral allegories to guardians and advocators for the weak and the suffering.

We also analyze the ways in which political and cultural identities were created through the appropriation of female images. This course offers contextualized knowledge about women in Chinese culture and more broadly the roles of women in the construction of Chinese society
