Abstract: The intention of this paper is to explore an implementation of audio compression and explain the theory behind each of the approaches taken. At its core, audio compression relies on orthonormal bases such as Fourier and wavelet bases to build finite signal representations. These coefficients are then approximated using scalar quantization and a Huffman encoding to create a compressed binary representation of the signal, preserving key components of the original signal that can be reconstructed from its compressed format. Choice of base and other parameter choices are explained and compared.
