TITLE: Probing the Structure of Neutron-rich Nuclei with Gamma-ray Vision
SPEAKER:
Partha Chowdhury
Professor and Chair, Department of Physics and Applied Physics
Director, Radiation Laboratory

ABSTRACT:
Looking into the workings of an atomic nucleus that is a millionth of a millionth of a millimeter in size is a daunting task. And it gets harder when we try to create and study ones that are exotic and do not live for very long before they decay and transmute. We will discuss why and how we produce and study them on earth so we can learn about how elements are produced in stars, and how we use gamma-ray spectroscopy to learn about their shapes, spins, symmetries and structure.
