Candidate Name:
Degree: Master’s
Defense Date: Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023
Time: 8 to 9 a.m.
Location: Southwick 240, North Campus
Thesis/Dissertation Title: Design, Manufacturing, and Evaluation of Functionally Graded Adhesive Joints using Radiation Sensitive Adhesives.
Committee:
- Advisor Scott Stapleton, Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell
- Christopher Hansen, Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell
- Daniel Schmidt, Plastics Engineering, Luxembourg Institute of Technology
Brief Abstract:
Adhesive which has mechanical properties that are sensitive to radiation exposure is used to try and spatially tailor mechanical properties in a structural adhesive joint. The adhesive joints were designed, manufactured, and tested using Single Lap joint tests and Double cantilever beam tests. The work revealed specific areas of improvement for manufacturing and designing FGA joints using this method and quantified the damage that a composite matrix takes when exposed to high doses of radiation.
