The Kennedy College of Science, Department of Chemistry, invites you to attend a research proposal defense by Young Kwan Cho entitled “Heavy Metal Ion Detection Using a Deep Learning Algorithm.” The defense will be held in Olney 520 on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
Committee Chair: Prof. Jay Park, Department of Plastics Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell
Committee Members:
- Prof. Kwok-Fan Chow, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell
- Prof. Dennis Christodouleas, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell
- Prof. David Ryan, Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts Lowell
Abstract:
Heavy metal ions are prevalent in the ground and tap water, about which there is a great concern. To detect the ions, analytical methods with nanoparticles and a deep-learning system with the advantages of ease of use, high selectivity, and portability will be used. The first application is that we will use the colorimetric-based device with the CNN algorithm. It will comprise a traditional gold nanoparticle aggregation system that is highly selective, robust, and capable of high throughput. Second is the magnetic bead pattern-based detection system with CNN. It will be ready to use on-site detection, with excellent selectivity and sensitivity compared with traditional methods.
All interested students and faculty members are invited to attend.
