Throughout his tenure at UMass Lowell, Matt has distinguished himself as an inquisitive and dedicated scholar, researcher, teacher and mentor. Since joining the university in 2013, he has taken on many roles, including serving as chair of the biological sciences department and helping to lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan to enhance the college’s research excellence. The result was a 70% increase in external research expenditures over five years. He also helped launch two new Ph.D. programs and co-chaired the UMass Lowell commission to prepare for the university’s ascent as a Research 1 institution. He holds six patents for innovations he developed through his research.
In the coming weeks, the college will be putting together a search committee to identify Matt’s successor. As we do so, please join me in thanking Matt for his service to the UMass Lowell community and wishing him much success in his new leadership role.
